| Label of the month: Fachwerk In a city littered with labels, this Berlin techno outpost composed of the work of three friends stands out as one of the most consistently engaging. Mike Dehnert is shaking his head. Roman Lindau has just said something else that he hopes won't make it into this article. It's at this moment I'm glad that I'm sitting down with all three of the principals behind Fachwerk Records at once. Putting personalities to some of Berlin's best faceless techno label is easy when you see them interact with one another. Dehnert is the stereotype of a German techno producer. He betrays few emotions. Sascha Rydell is good-natured, and leaves few strong impressions. A perfect gentleman. Lindau is the joker. The one you don't want quoted. Especially because he's speaking in his non-native tongue. And especially because misinterpreting a group dynamic that has been cultivated over nearly two decades of friendship is something journalists specialize in. It's almost impossible to misinterpret what the childhood friends have done over the past few years musically, however. Since 2007, the trio have collectively produced one of the most consistent labels in a city that hardly lacks for quality techno. I've heard plenty of people claim "formula" when it comes to Fachwerk, but I tend to call it "consistency." It's easy to get jaded when everything that a label releases is—at the very least—top-shelf electronic music. But despite appearances, it's not that easy to make it. | ||||
